History of The Horse & Chains

Having a celebration? We can cater for up to 20 in our snug or 40 in our restaurant, both available for hire for that special occasion!

The earliest reference to the building is 1698. At that time it
was known as “The two cottages at the stump”. The stump being a post at which horses would be rested. The building was a halfway point up the hill where carriage horses would stop for a drink, and the owners for a pint.

Dick Turpin reportedly stayed here in 1742 before the last horse “Old Poll” was retired in 1938 and the stable, barn and horse trough were all removed.

In October 2007, after huge amounts of care and attention, the Horse & Chains was reopened under its original name. It is now a fun, busy pub and a clear hit with local residents.
